My external hard drive made my laptop crash and not start. Any ideas on how to help?
I plugged in my old external hard drive (5+ years old) into my 1.5 year old laptop for the first time this morning and it crashed my computer. Now I cannot even turn my computer on even though the battery is fully charged.
Anybody have any ideas?! Should I not plug this external drive into another computer ever again?
Some drives will only work properly if you start the computer first, then plug the drive in after the computer is finished booting. It also may not be compatible with the new operating system.
Check the website for your hard drive to see if there’s an upgrade to its firmware to make it compatible with newer OSs. Also check the compatibility site of your OS to see if the drive appears.
You may need to plug it into an older machine to recover the data and copy it to a newer drive or directly to your new computer.
